Assessment and Referral Process

What to Expect

We recognise that reaching out for support can feel daunting. Our aim is to make the process of accessing counselling as transparent, supportive and straightforward as possible.

Step One: Complete a Referral Form

The first step is to complete the referral form most appropriate to your circumstances.

Referral forms are available for:

  • Affordable Therapy.
  • Mid-Priced Therapy.
  • Children and Young People’s Counselling.
  • Student Counsellor Placements.

Step Two: Attend an Assessment Session

Following receipt of your referral, an assessment appointment will be arranged.

The assessment session provides an opportunity to:

  • Explore the difficulties bringing you to counselling.
  • Discuss previous support experiences.
  • Identify therapeutic goals.
  • Determine whether counselling is appropriate.
  • Consider which practitioner may be best suited to your needs.
  • Answer any questions you may have.

Assessment Fee

Assessment sessions are charged at £30. This fee applies regardless of whether you subsequently access the Affordable Therapy Scheme or Mid-Priced Therapy Scheme.

Step Three: Counsellor Allocation

Following assessment, we will allocate a counsellor suited to your needs.

Where possible, we will consider factors such as:

  • Presenting concerns.
  • Availability.
  • Therapeutic needs.
  • Practitioner experience.
  • Preferences regarding counsellor gender.

Step Four: Beginning Therapy

Once matched, your counsellor will contact you directly to arrange your first appointment.

Together, you will begin establishing therapeutic goals and developing a counselling relationship based upon trust, collaboration and respect.

A Flexible Approach

We understand that people’s needs evolve over time. Therapy may be short-term or longer-term depending upon your circumstances, goals and the clinical judgement of your practitioner.

Our aim is to provide support that remains responsive to individual needs wherever possible.
