About

Getting to know Protea Wellbeing — our story, our approach, and the standards that underpin everything we do.

Our Story

Protea Wellbeing was established in response to an increasing need for accessible mental health support within local communities.

Our Founder and Director recognised that many individuals who could benefit from counselling were unable to access it due to financial pressures, lengthy waiting lists, or limited availability within existing services.

At the same time, counselling students were often experiencing difficulties finding meaningful placement opportunities where they could develop their clinical skills within a supportive environment.

Protea Wellbeing was created to address both of these challenges. By working alongside trainee counsellors in the final stages of accredited training, in addition to qualified practitioners, we are able to provide high-quality therapeutic support at a reduced cost while maintaining professional standards and ethical practice.

Our vision remains at the heart of everything we do:

To provide accessible, affordable and effective counselling for those who need it.

A Service Built on Relationships

We recognise that the relationship between counsellor and client is one of the most significant factors in successful therapy. Feeling heard, understood and accepted can create the conditions necessary for meaningful change.

For this reason, we place great importance on matching clients with practitioners who are suited to their individual needs and preferences.

Should difficulties arise within the therapeutic relationship, we encourage open conversations and will endeavour to explore alternative options where appropriate.

Long-Term Support

Many therapeutic services operate within strict time limitations. Whilst brief interventions can be helpful, we recognise that some individuals benefit from longer-term therapeutic relationships that allow them the space and time to explore deeper issues.

At Protea Wellbeing, we are particularly proud of our ability to offer ongoing support wherever clinically appropriate and feasible.

Our aim is not simply to provide sessions, but to create opportunities for lasting growth and wellbeing.

An Integrative Approach to Counselling

At Protea Wellbeing, our practitioners adopt an integrative approach to therapy. Integrative counselling involves drawing upon different therapeutic models and interventions in order to tailor support to the individual sitting in front of us.

Rather than believing there is a single “right” approach to counselling, integrative practitioners recognise that different people may benefit from different therapeutic perspectives. Our counsellors work collaboratively with clients to understand their experiences, identify goals and determine what approach may be most beneficial.

What Does This Mean for You?

An integrative approach means that therapy can be adapted to meet your unique needs. Your counsellor may help you to:

Develop insight into patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.
Explore the impact of past experiences.
Improve emotional awareness and regulation.
Identify strengths and internal resources.
Build healthier coping strategies.
Strengthen self-esteem and confidence.
Enhance relationships and communication.
Work towards meaningful personal goals.

The therapeutic process is collaborative. You remain the expert on your own life, whilst your counsellor brings professional knowledge, curiosity and support. Together, you can work towards greater understanding, resilience and wellbeing.

The Importance of Individuality

We believe therapy should honour the individuality of every client. People seek counselling for many different reasons, including:

Anxiety and stress Depression and low mood Relationship difficulties Bereavement and loss Work-related pressures Family challenges Identity exploration Life transitions Trauma Low self-esteem Feelings of being “stuck” A desire for personal growth

Whatever your experiences may be, our aim is to provide a non-judgemental environment where you feel safe enough to explore them.

Professional Standards

At Protea Wellbeing, professionalism and ethical practice underpin every aspect of our work. We understand that choosing a counsellor involves placing trust in another person during what may be a vulnerable time.

For this reason, we are committed to maintaining high standards of care and accountability.

Professional Membership

Our counsellors are members of recognised professional organisations, including:

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).
Other recognised professional bodies where appropriate.

These organisations provide ethical frameworks and professional guidance designed to protect clients and promote best practice.

Clinical Supervision

All counsellors working within Protea Wellbeing engage in regular clinical supervision. Supervision provides practitioners with an opportunity to reflect upon their work, enhance their skills and ensure that the support they provide remains safe, effective and ethical.

Trainee counsellors receive additional oversight and support throughout their placements.

Continuing Professional Development

Learning does not end at qualification. Our practitioners are committed to ongoing professional development to ensure they remain informed by current research, legislation and emerging best practice within the counselling profession.

This commitment supports the delivery of high-quality therapeutic services for our clients.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Protea Wellbeing welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and communities. We are committed to providing a service that is respectful, inclusive and free from discrimination.

We value diversity and recognise the importance of understanding each individual’s unique experiences, identities and cultural contexts.
